Pope Francis hospitalized for bilateral pneumonia: “Complex picture”

Pope is in good spirits despite polymicrobial infection that has complicated his treatment

Pope Francis is currently hospitalized at the Gemelli Polyclinic in Rome due to bilateral pneumonia. According to the Vatican’s latest update, laboratory tests, chest X-ray and the Holy Father’s general condition continue to present a complex picture. The polymicrobial infection, which developed over a framework of bronchiectasis and asthmatic bronchitis, necessitated the use of cortisone and antibiotic therapy, further complicating treatment.

The follow-up chest CT scan, performed this afternoon, was prescribed by the Vatican health team together with the medical team of the “A. Gemelli” Polyclinic Foundation. Despite the situation, the Pope remains in good spirits: this morning he received the Eucharist and, throughout the day, he alternated moments of rest, prayer and reading texts. In the Vatican’s note, it is reported that Pope Francis thanks for the closeness he has received and gratefully asks for continued prayers for him.
