President Donald Trump used a Capitol Hill appearance to sharply escalate his political rhetoric, warning that Democrats are “bringing in communists” while defending his push for election reform legislation over a stalled housing bill.

Arriving for a lunch with Republican senators, Trump framed the current political battle in ideological terms, arguing that every election carries existential weight. “Every election is important. They want to bring in a lot of communists,” he said, responding to questions about why he had halted the signing of a housing crisis bill in favor of advancing the Save America Act.

The president insisted that Congress must prioritize his election reform package, which calls for stricter controls on voting procedures, over measures addressing rising housing costs. The decision has intensified debate within Republican ranks, where the housing bill had been viewed as a key response to voter concerns over affordability.

Trump directly linked his remarks to recent Democratic gains in New York, referring to candidates associated with Zohran Mamdani, the city’s socialist mayor. “The people they are putting forward are communists, and this country will not have communists,” he said.

In a separate post on Truth Social earlier in the day, Trump accused what he called “fake news” media of celebrating Democratic primary results while ignoring Republican victories, claiming that outlets praised “three solid communists” while overlooking 16 Trump-aligned candidates.

The remarks and the legislative pause have triggered unease among Republican lawmakers, some of whom described the move as politically difficult to explain at a time when economic concerns dominate the electorate.

Despite the controversy, Republicans note that Trump has not formally issued a veto threat. Without executive opposition, the housing bill could still become law automatically after a ten-day period, provided it continues to receive bipartisan backing.
