Keir Starmer resignation Monday: reports suggest possible exit under pressure

UK prime minister faces growing internal pressure as Labour tensions rise after Burnham’s by-election win

Keir Starmer resignation Monday is being reported as a possible scenario, according to The Observer, amid growing political pressure on the UK prime minister and increasing uncertainty within the Labour Party.

Starmer, who has previously insisted he would withstand any challenge to his leadership, is now said to be considering a structured timeline for a potential departure from Downing Street. The reports suggest that he has held discussions over the past two days with government ministers, party donors, and trade union representatives.

According to a source cited by the newspaper, the prime minister has “come up against the reality that the support is not there,” adding that the current situation is widely viewed within political circles as unsustainable. The same source described a sense of inevitability, noting that political momentum within the party appears to be shifting.

Attention has also turned to Labour MP Andy Burnham, whose victory in the Makerfield by-election has reportedly strengthened his standing within parts of the party. Following the result, support among MPs for Burnham’s potential leadership role is said to have increased.

Earlier on Sunday, UK Trade Secretary Peter Kyle told Sky News that Starmer was spending the weekend “reflecting on political realities.” Speaking on behalf of the government, he declined to comment on internal discussions or on what advice he may have given the prime minister.

Asked about the possibility of a resignation on Monday, Kyle said he had no reason to believe that was imminent. He added that Starmer was considering what it means to “put the country first” during a politically sensitive moment.

Kyle also did not rule out the possibility of changes at Downing Street following Burnham’s electoral success. He confirmed that he had spoken with Starmer on Friday and said the prime minister had been engaged in wide-ranging consultations over the weekend.

“I believe he is taking time to reflect on the political realities, the challenges and the opportunities before him,” Kyle said, adding that this was consistent with the expectations placed on a national leader during periods of uncertainty.
