California: new fire warnings and solidarity initiatives
While progress is being made in containing the fires, Los Angeles is preparing for new dangerous winds. Meanwhile, solidarity is mobilised with a major benefit concert
Despite significant progress in containing the wildfires ravaging Los Angeles County, California, authorities and meteorologists have issued a new warning: another wave of strong and dangerous winds is expected early next week, putting already affected areas at risk.
Currently, more than 170,000 people are subject to evacuation orders. For many of the evacuees, returning home remains a distant goal: hazardous material is still being removed, and it is estimated that some will not be able to return to their neighbourhoods for months. Fatalities from the fires have risen to 27, with the latest confirmation concerning a 69-year-old man who went missing during the Palisades fire in Malibu.
Investigation and prevention
Experts and investigators are working to determine the main causes of the fires that have ravaged the region. However, according to the authorities, it will take months before definitive answers are obtained. In the meantime, communities continue to deal with the damage and plan for reconstruction.
FireAid: a concert for reconstruction
In response to the tragedy, solidarity was mobilised with an extraordinary event. On 30 January, the biggest stars of international music will take part in the ‘FireAid’ benefit concert at the Intuit Dome and the Kia Forum in Los Angeles. The event, which will be broadcast live and available for streaming on platforms such as Apple Music, Netflix, Paramount+ and Prime Video, aims to raise funds to rebuild affected communities and support the prevention of future fire-related disasters.
Confirmed artists include Billie Eilish, who will perform alongside her brother Finneas O’Connell, Lady Gaga, Sting, Pink, Katy Perry, Rod Stewart and Stevie Nicks. The concert will also feature the first joint live performance by Dave Matthews and John Mayer. Other big names include Gwen Stefani, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Joni Mitchell, Green Day and many others.
Rod Stewart, who recently left Los Angeles to return to the UK after 30 years, will take the stage a few days after celebrating his 80th birthday. ‘FireAid’ has been described by organisers as a crucial event to support devastated communities and raise awareness of the importance of preventing future fires in the region.
Tickets will be available starting Wednesday on Ticketmaster, with more artists expected to be announced in the coming days.
