U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent allegedly advised Donald Trump in the past against inviting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to the Oval Office, while also using highly derogatory language about him in private conversations.
The claims emerge from Regime Change, a forthcoming book by New York Times journalists Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan, with excerpts reported by The Guardian.
According to the book, Bessent reportedly referred to Zelensky with offensive expressions in private discussions, including calling him “Mr Bean on crack” and a “little idiot.” The same sources indicate that he also expressed strong criticism of the Ukrainian president in conversations with colleagues, particularly in relation to negotiations over a minerals agreement between Washington and Kyiv.
