Woman and 5-month-old baby die after boat capsizes in New York late Saturday night near Liberty Island in New York Harbor, after a vessel carrying 14 people overturned in the water.
The incident occurred at about 10:25 p.m., according to police cited by the New York Post. The boat was reportedly a speedboat measuring just under 7 meters long.
Twelve people were rescued from the water following the accident. New York Police Department divers recovered the woman and the five-month-old infant and took them to a hospital, where both later died. The circumstances that caused the boat to overturn remain unclear.
Fire Department helicopters also responded to the scene, while several rescue vessels searched the waters of the harbor.
Some of those rescued were taken to NYU Langone Hospital–Brooklyn. Several survivors were seen still wearing their life jackets after being brought to safety.
