Nigeria, woman burned alive for blasphemy against Islam

The tragic incident took place in Niger State, where an angry mob attacked the woman

A woman accused of blasphemy was burned alive by a mob on Saturday in central Nigeria. The victim, identified as Amaye, a food vendor from Katsina State in the north-west of the country, was reportedly attacked after making comments about the Prophet Muhammad, according to local police spokesman Wasiu Abiodun.

The police condemned all forms of vigilante justice and urged citizens to remain calm while the investigation to identify the attackers was ongoing.

In 12 Muslim-majority states in Nigeria, including Niger, Sharia law coexists with common law, and blasphemy is punishable by death. However, in many cases, the accused are lynched by mobs without any legal process. Similar incidents, albeit rare, have occurred in recent years: in June 2023, a butcher was stoned to death in Sokoto, and a year earlier, a Christian university student was killed by Muslim peers following similar accusations.
