Burnham confirmed as Labour leader, set to become Prime Minister on Monday
Uncontested leadership outcome announced by the National Executive Committee. Burnham succeeds Keir Starmer and pledges to restore “hope” across the country
Andy Burnham has been confirmed as leader of the Labour Party and will become Prime Minister on Monday, replacing outgoing leader Keir Starmer. The result was formally announced on Friday 17 July by Shabana Mahmood, chair of the party’s National Executive Committee, following an uncontested leadership process.
“The outcome of this leadership contest has not been a close-run affair, given there was only one valid candidate,” Mahmood said. “It is my honour to declare that the duly elected leader of the Labour Party is Andy Burnham.”
Often referred to as the “King of the North”, Burnham described the moment as “incredible” and paid tribute to his predecessor, thanking Starmer for “his service to the party and the country” and for leading Labour “from our worst defeat to one of the greatest victories in our history”.
In his acceptance remarks, Burnham framed his mandate as a response to voters across the country, citing Makerfield as emblematic of wider national sentiment. “People in places long overlooked, from north to south, have called for a return to the Labour Party they once knew. We will answer that call. We will be that Labour Party again,” he said.
He added that he felt ready to take on the role, describing the appointment as both “a moment of pride and deep emotion” and a responsibility he was prepared to shoulder. “We will build on the foundations laid, more than anyone else, by Keir Starmer,” he said.
Burnham also set out his central political message: restoring public confidence. “People and communities have waited too long for politics to give them back hope. That is what we will do. We will restore that hope.”
