Less than a month after the US-Iran memorandum of understanding, military tensions have risen again with new strikes, accusations and threats involving the Strait of Hormuz and regional forces

The US-Iran escalation after ceasefire began less than a month after the memorandum of understanding reached between Washington and Tehran. The 14-point document, released on June 17, followed weeks of conflict and came nearly four months after the United States and Israel launched military operations against the Islamic Republic on February 28, prompting a response from Tehran.

The fragile pause in hostilities has since deteriorated, with a new series of strikes, accusations and military actions involving the United States, Iran and other actors across the region.

June 26: Trump accuses Iran of violating the truce

On June 26, US President Donald Trump accused Iran of what he described as a “crazy violation” of the ceasefire, claiming that Tehran had attacked a merchant vessel transiting the Strait of Hormuz. The United States carried out new raids against Iranian targets.

July 7: New US strikes and Iranian retaliation

On July 7, the US Central Command (Centcom), responsible for American military operations in the region, confirmed that it had struck “more than 80 Iranian targets” in response to what it called Iran’s “latest attacks against merchant vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz.”
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), known as the Pasdaran, claimed responsibility for attacks targeting US military sites in Bahrain and Kuwait.

July 8: Trump declares the ceasefire over

Speaking to journalists in Ankara on the sidelines of the NATO summit, Trump said that the ceasefire with Iran was, “as far as I’m concerned, over,” adding harsh criticism against Tehran.

July 11: Centcom reports more than 300 targets hit

On July 11, Centcom announced that US forces had struck “more than 300 targets” over “three nights of operations.”
According to the command, the goal was to “reduce Iran’s ability to attack civilians and merchant vessels transiting the Strait” of Hormuz.

July 12: Expanded operations and first use of naval drones

On July 12, Centcom announced new raids against targets in several areas of Iran.
The statement said that “precision-guided munitions” were used to “reduce Iran’s ability to continue attacking international maritime traffic passing through the Strait of Hormuz.”
The operations involved “fighter jets, naval vessels, one-way attack drones and one-way attack naval drones for the first time.”
Centcom also released images of the first operation involving three Corsair one-way naval drones.
Iran responded by again targeting US military objectives in the region.

July 13: Naval blockade announced and new threats

On July 13, Centcom announced that, starting at 10 p.m. Italian time and following an order from Trump, the naval blockade affecting maritime traffic entering and leaving Iranian ports would be reactivated.
Trump said the United States would become the “guardian” of the Strait of Hormuz and argued that Washington should receive compensation, including payments equal to 20% of the value of goods transported by ships using the strategic route.
The same day, tensions also resurfaced on the Yemen front, involving the internationally recognized government backed by Saudi Arabia and the Houthi movement, which Iran has long been accused of supporting.
For Iran, the third consecutive night of US raids began.
Speaking to conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt, Trump identified Iran’s Pickaxe Mountain site, known in Persian as Kuh-e Kolang Gaz La, as a possible target, saying the United States could strike it “relatively soon.”
Later, from the Oval Office, Trump said that an agreement with Iran remained “possible.”

July 14: Iranian warning and new regional tensions

On July 14, a senior Iranian security source told CNN that any attack on Pickaxe Mountain would trigger a “devastating” response.
Meanwhile, Iranian media continued reporting explosions, including in Bandar Abbas, a strategic port city in southern Iran, and in Bushehr.
Bahrain again accused the Islamic Republic of carrying out new attacks, while the Pasdaran claimed to have targeted a US air base in Jordan with ballistic missiles.
In Rome, a new round of direct negotiations between Lebanon and Israel began with US mediation. The talks are formally separate from the US-Iran dispute but remain connected to the broader regional dynamics, alongside the Yemen crisis.
