Scott Bessent Allegedly Made Offensive Remarks About Zelensky, Book Claims
Excerpt from Regime Change reports internal tensions in Trump administration over Ukraine talks and Oval Office meeting
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent allegedly advised Donald Trump in the past against inviting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to the Oval Office, while also using highly derogatory language about him in private conversations.
The claims emerge from Regime Change, a forthcoming book by New York Times journalists Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan, with excerpts reported by The Guardian.
According to the book, Bessent reportedly referred to Zelensky with offensive expressions in private discussions, including calling him “Mr Bean on crack” and a “little idiot.” The same sources indicate that he also expressed strong criticism of the Ukrainian president in conversations with colleagues, particularly in relation to negotiations over a minerals agreement between Washington and Kyiv.
The reported remarks are framed within the broader context of a tense meeting between Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky on February 28, 2025. During that encounter, the Ukrainian leader was reportedly subjected to sharp criticism from several members of the administration, including Vice President J.D. Vance.
The book describes internal disagreements within the U.S. administration over the handling of Ukraine-related negotiations and diplomatic engagement with Kyiv, particularly in relation to strategic and economic agreements.
