Venezuela imposes restrictions on diplomatic staff from Italy, France and the Netherlands
Caracas is restricting European diplomatic presence in response to alleged interference in its internal affairs and support for groups opposed to President Maduro
Venezuelan authorities have reduced to three the number of diplomats allowed to stay in the country for delegations from Italy, France and the Netherlands, due to what is described as ‘hostile’ conduct towards the government of Nicolás Maduro. The measure, announced by the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry, is a reaction to criticism received from European governments regarding Maduro’s inauguration for his third term.
In addition to the reduction of diplomatic staff, the Venezuelan government has imposed that diplomats from the three countries cannot travel more than 40 kilometres from ‘Plaza Bolívar’, in the centre of Caracas, without written authorisation.
In a note, the Foreign Ministry in Caracas explained that these measures were taken ‘in response to the hostile behaviour’ of Italy, France and the Netherlands, accused of supporting ‘extremist groups’ and interfering in Venezuela’s internal affairs.
The restrictions must be met within 48 hours, with Caracas reiterating the country’s right to demand respect for its sovereignty and self-determination. Maduro’s government said it was ready to take further measures to ensure Venezuela’s stability and peace, in accordance with international law.
