Attack in Magdeburg: Killer arrested after massacre in the crowd
A Saudi Arabian doctor driving the car that ploughed into the Christmas market, leaving at least two people dead and about eighty injured
The attacker responsible for throwing a car into the crowd in Magdeburg, causing the death of at least 2 people and injuring 80 others, has been arrested. He is Taleb A., a 50-year-old Saudi citizen, a doctor specialising in psychiatry. The man lives and works in the town of Bernburg, about 45 kilometres from the scene of the massacre. His gesture deeply shocked Germany, and new details about his profile are emerging from the ongoing investigation.
Arrival in Germany and the context of the gesture
According to the authorities, Taleb A. arrived in Germany in 2006 from Saudi Arabia. The premier of the state of Saxony-Anhalt, Reiner Haseloff, confirmed that the bomber was born in 1974 and acted alone, with an attack that is currently considered to be that of a ‘lone wolf’. Haseloff tried to reassure the population by stating that ‘there is no further danger to the city’, but fear remains high among citizens.
An unexpected attack: the killer was not under surveillance by the authorities
The German authorities made it clear that Taleb A. was not known as an Islamic extremist and was not under special surveillance. This made the attack even more unexpected and difficult to prevent. The car, a BMW, hit the crowd in the Christmas market at 19:04, at a time when many people were present to shop and enjoy the festive atmosphere. After running over several people, the vehicle continued its course for about 400 metres before coming to a halt.
Ongoing investigation: the hypothesis of a bomb on board
The police have carefully examined the vehicle used in the attack, a BMW, assuming the presence of an explosive device on board. However, further investigations are underway to ascertain all the details and fully understand the dynamics of what happened. At the moment, no official confirmation of the presence of explosives has emerged, but the investigators’ attention remains high.
