Melania Trump Announces Oleshky Ceasefire as Debate Erupts Over Credit
The First Lady says a Russia-Ukraine ceasefire has taken effect ahead of schedule in the Kherson region, while social media users clash over who deserves recognition for the breakthrough
As a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine took effect in and around Oleshky, First Lady Melania Trump moved to publicly confirm the development, describing the agreement as an accelerated humanitarian measure aimed at protecting civilians and expanding aid access in the Kherson region.
In a brief statement posted to her social media accounts, Trump said the ceasefire formally entered into force at 4:00 a.m. Moscow time on October 27, 2026. The announcement follows recent remarks by President Donald Trump, who had maintained that the breakthrough was achieved through his wife’s mediation efforts.
“The ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia entered into force at 4:00 a.m. (Moscow time) on October 27, 2026,” Trump wrote.
Ceasefire Expanded Beyond Oleshky
According to the First Lady, the timeline for implementing the truce was moved forward by two days from the original schedule in an effort to improve civilian safety and speed the delivery of humanitarian assistance.
Trump said the geographical scope of the ceasefire had also been widened beyond Oleshky, in the Kherson region, to ensure safe passage for humanitarian convoys operating in the area.
She added that confirmation of the arrangement had come from General Valery Gerasimov, Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces.
“The timetable was brought forward by two days to protect civilian lives and facilitate the delivery of essential humanitarian aid,” Trump wrote. “The geographic area covered by the ceasefire has been extended beyond Oleshky, in the Kherson region, to guarantee safe passage for humanitarian convoys.”
Social Media Users Dispute Credit
The announcement quickly drew reactions online, with supporters and critics offering sharply contrasting assessments of Trump’s role in the process.
Some users hailed her as a “First Lady of peace” and praised her involvement in the diplomatic effort. Others rejected the narrative that she had played a decisive role, arguing instead that Pope Leo had helped lay the groundwork for the ceasefire that took effect Tuesday.
“It is thanks to Pope Leo, not you, that this achievement was reached,” one user wrote in response to the post.
Another comment accused political figures of sidelining the pontiff’s contribution, stating: “They’re even taking credit away from the Pope.”
The exchanges underscored how quickly a development welcomed for its humanitarian implications also became the subject of a public dispute over who should be credited for helping bring it about.
