Hayden Panettiere Death Ruled Accidental as Police Close Case
Authorities say the actress died from the toxic effects of multiple substances, formally ending a South Carolina investigation that drew attention because of her long public battle with addiction and the circumstances surrounding her final hours
The investigation into the death of Hayden Panettiere has ended with a conclusion that removes lingering questions about how one of television’s most recognizable stars died: authorities say her death was accidental, caused by the combined toxic effects of multiple substances found in her system.
The Greenville Police Department announced the closure of its investigation into the actress’s death, adopting the findings of forensic and medical authorities who determined that fentanyl, Xanax and other drugs were responsible for her fatal overdose. The ruling confirms conclusions previously reached by the Greenville County Coroner’s Office and effectively closes the local inquiry into the death of the former Heroes and Nashville star, who died Aug. 16 at age 36.
The official findings identified fentanyl and Xanax among the substances that caused the fatal toxicity. Examiners also detected methocarbamol, a muscle relaxant, and quetiapine, a medication used to treat certain psychiatric disorders. Authorities said the determination was based on toxicology results, autopsy findings and the broader investigative review conducted after Panettiere’s death.
The actress was found unresponsive inside a South Carolina residence on Aug. 16. According to the police report from that day, emergency responders were dispatched to aid a woman suffering cardiac arrest. An autopsy later found no traumatic injuries that contributed to her death, a key finding that reinforced investigators’ conclusion that the overdose was accidental rather than the result of foul play.
The ruling brings closure to the local investigation but does not fully end official scrutiny of the circumstances surrounding Panettiere’s death. The Drug Enforcement Administration also opened an inquiry into the case, reflecting the federal agency’s role in investigating matters connected to controlled substances. It remains unclear whether that federal investigation has been completed. The BBC reported that it had contacted the agency seeking clarification.
Records from the day of Panettiere’s death also identified her former partner, Brian Hickerson, and his brother, Zack Hickerson, as being present when emergency personnel arrived. Brian Hickerson had previously acknowledged abusing the actress, a history that resurfaced as details contained in law enforcement reports became public.
For many Americans, the news carried an additional layer of tragedy because Panettiere’s struggles with substance dependence had never been a private secret. Throughout her career, she spoke openly about addiction and the impact it had on her life, discussing challenges that persisted even as she maintained a successful career in film and television.
That career began when she was still a child and eventually made her a familiar face to audiences around the world. She achieved international fame as Claire Bennet in Heroes, later earned critical recognition for her role as Juliette Barnes in Nashville, and appeared in the Scream horror franchise, building a résumé that extended across television and film over more than two decades.
With investigators finding no evidence that injury or outside violence contributed to her death, the official record now reflects a conclusion shaped by toxicology, medical evidence and months of review: Hayden Panettiere died from an accidental overdose caused by the toxic effects of multiple substances.
