Triumph of PM Takaichi’s party in Japan snap election

Exit polls point to a strong victory for the ruling coalition in the lower house vote

The triumph of PM Takaichi’s party in Japan snap election is already taking shape in the first projections released after polls closed on Sunday, February 8, in the vote to renew the lower house of Japan’s Diet. The early election had been called by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to strengthen the ruling coalition’s parliamentary majority.

According to exit polls published by Asahi Shimbun, Takaichi’s Liberal Democratic Party is projected to win around 300 of the 465 seats in the lower house. The figures reinforce expectations of the triumph of PM Takaichi’s party in Japan snap election, consolidating the government’s legislative position.

Support from coalition partner Ishin is also expected to play a key role. The party is projected to retain its 34 seats. In this scenario, the governing coalition would likely surpass the two-thirds supermajority threshold of 310 seats.

If confirmed by the official count, the triumph of PM Takaichi’s party in Japan snap election would mark a decisive political result, strengthening the current government’s mandate and parliamentary control.
