Prince Harry Says He Wants Reconciliation With the Royal Family
The Duke of Sussex calls reconciliation “the most important thing” and urges people not to carry family conflicts forever
After years of public tension, family divisions and royal fallout, Prince Harry says he wants reconciliation.
In an interview with GQ recorded in New York in September and released in recent days, the Duke of Sussex spoke openly about the value of repairing fractured relationships, making clear that he would like to heal the rift with the Royal Family. Harry, who recently returned to live in the United Kingdom with his wife, Meghan Markle, and their children, Archie and Lilibet, stopped short of discussing specific disputes but left little doubt about where he stands.
“Some people don’t want things to work out. I do,” Harry said. “Considering everything that’s happening in the world, the most important thing is reconciliation. That’s the central point.”
The comments quickly fueled speculation about the state of his relationships with both his brother, Prince William, and his father, King Charles III. Harry did not elaborate on any private conversations or ongoing efforts to mend those ties, instead focusing on a broader message about forgiveness and moving forward.
“The scars remain forever,” he said. “But how you view them, the attitude you take toward what happened, and your ability to leave the past behind, that’s something I would encourage anyone to do.”
He returned to the theme later in the interview, arguing that family conflicts are burdens people do not need to carry indefinitely.
“As far as I’m concerned, there’s already enough drama in the world, and in people’s lives, without dragging around problems with your own family,” he said.
The reaction was swift enough that a spokesperson moved to clarify Harry’s remarks, stressing that his comments were “absolutely not intended as a dig at his brother William or any other member of his family.”
Even so, the strained relationship between Harry and senior members of the House of Windsor remains well known. He and Meghan no longer carry out official duties on behalf of the monarchy and do not take part in institutional royal engagements.
The breakdown in relations dates back to January 2020, when Harry and Meghan announced their decision to step away from their roles as senior members of the Royal Family. The move, which sent shockwaves through the monarchy, set the couple on a new path that included dividing their time between the United Kingdom and the United States and ultimately reshaped their relationship with the rest of the Windsor family.
