Trump: ‘There is no genocide in Gaza.’ And he sends an emissary to Moscow for peace

The US president rules out genocide in the Strip and announces a diplomatic mission to Russia to stop the war

‘I don’t think genocide is taking place in the Gaza Strip.’ This was stated by US President Donald Trump in response to questions from journalists. According to the White House chief, ‘horrible things happened’ during the attack launched by Hamas against Israel on 7 October 2023, but it cannot be called genocide.

Trump’s words come at a time of growing international debate over the responsibilities and scale of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, fuelled by months of war and siege. Several United Nations agencies and human rights organisations have expressed alarm at the situation in the Palestinian territory, but the US administration remains cautious in legally defining what is happening.

During the same speech, Trump announced that his special envoy, Steve Witkoff, will be in Russia in the coming days, probably “Wednesday or Thursday”, with the stated aim of promoting diplomatic mediation. “We want to reach an agreement to stop people from being killed,” the president explained, referring both to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine and to the new global balance that Washington intends to manage directly.
