The Catholic Church has a new Pope. At 6:05pm today, the white smoke from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel announced to the world the election of Pope Francis’ successor at the end of the fifth ballot of the Conclave.

The new pontiff is Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, 69 American, prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and president of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America, a figure considered moderate. He chose to take the name Pope Leo 14.

The official announcement was made from the central balcony of St Peter’s Basilica by the Cardinal Protodeacon, with the traditional formula: ‘Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum: habemus Papam!’

The square, packed with faithful and pilgrims from all over the world, enthusiastically welcomed the appearance of the new pontiff, who appeared to impart his first Urbi et Orbi blessing.
