Trump’s escalating attacks on allies: from Pope Leo XIV to Macron and Meloni

A string of public attacks on Western leaders raises concerns as the Italian prime minister becomes the latest target

Donald Trump appears increasingly out of control, and the fact that he is the President of the United States is causing growing concern on the global stage. His public statements and recent policy decisions—from tariffs to military actions, along with a softer stance toward Vladimir Putin and agreements widely seen as favorable to Iran—are fueling tensions with long-standing allies.

The president’s remarks have become more frequent and more direct, targeting political and institutional leaders across the Western world, undermining long-established alliances and diplomatic balances.

From Pope Leo XIV to Emmanuel Macron, passing through Friedrich Merz and Keir Starmer, and now Giorgia Meloni, the list of targets continues to grow, painting a picture of increasingly personal and confrontational rhetoric.

The Pope has been labeled “weak” and accused of being too soft on Iran, with Trump claiming he is “playing with a country that wants a nuclear weapon.” These attacks have also been echoed on social media, where the president has taken a hard line against any diplomatic openness.

French President Emmanuel Macron has long been one of Trump’s preferred targets. After an initial phase of apparent alignment, their relationship devolved into repeated public criticism—from NATO disputes to personal remarks—with Trump stating that “Emmanuel always gets it wrong.”

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has also come under fire following his criticism of U.S. strategy in the conflict with Iran. Trump responded bluntly: “He doesn’t know what he’s talking about,” reinforcing an increasingly confrontational stance toward European leaders.

The United Kingdom has not been spared. Prime Minister Keir Starmer was criticized for delays in allowing the use of British military bases during operations against Iran. “I’m not happy with the United Kingdom,” Trump said, pointing to operational difficulties and adding, “We’re not dealing with Winston Churchill.”

Within this broader pattern comes the latest clash with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
“She begged me to take a picture with her. She wanted that photo so badly. I might not have done it, but I felt sorry for her,” Trump said in a phone interview with the Italian TV program “L’Aria che tira” on La7.

Meloni swiftly rejected the claim, calling it “completely made up” and firmly denying Trump’s version of events, marking yet another point of tension between Washington and Rome.

Taken together, these repeated and increasingly direct attacks point to a growing strain in relations between the United States and its traditional allies, at a time when the international landscape is already highly fragile.
