Canada and China impose tariffs in response to Trump’s trade policies

Canada and China respond to Trump’s tariffs: punitive tariffs and trade retaliation

The tariff war launched by Donald Trump takes a concrete turn with the first international responses. After the announcement of new tariffs imposed on the United States, Canada decided to respond with 25% duties on American imports, starting at midnight. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau criticised the US administration’s move, stating that there is no justification for the introduction of these tariffs. Ottawa has warned that it will continue with the retaliation, extending the measure to a total value of $155 billion in US goods.

China also initiated retaliatory measures, announcing 15% tariffs on US agri-food products, such as chicken, wheat, corn, and cotton, starting on 10 March. Beijing also placed several US ‘entities’ on an export control list, thus increasing diplomatic tensions with Washington.
