Authorities in northwestern Pennsylvania are investigating a mass killing that left eight people dead, including two children, after a gunman opened fire outside a residence and later died inside the home
ERIE, Pa. — Eight people, including two children, were killed in a shooting Friday in Erie, Pennsylvania, in an attack that began outside a residence and ended with the suspected gunman dead inside the home, according to local reports.
Police were dispatched to the scene at about 5 p.m. after witnesses reported seeing a man firing a handgun outside the property, Erie News Now reported. By the time officers arrived, the situation had escalated into a deadly standoff centered on the residence.
Two women were discovered dead on the street near the home. Investigators later found additional victims inside the residence, where the suspect had retreated after the shooting.
As officers surrounded the property and repeatedly ordered the man to surrender, gunfire was heard from within the house. The suspect remained barricaded inside while police attempted to bring the incident to an end.
When authorities entered the residence, they found multiple bodies as well as the suspected shooter. The man is believed to have taken his own life, local media reported.
The attack left eight people dead in total, among them two children. Authorities have not publicly released further information about the victims or the circumstances surrounding the killings.
Reached by Agence France-Presse, Erie police declined to comment on the case.
