Westchester Voting Machine Problems Spark Fraud Claims in Key Mike Lawler Contest

Election officials in one of New York’s most closely watched congressional battlegrounds are urging voters not to be discouraged by ballot-scanner malfunctions, while Trump allies are using the disruptions to promote allegations of election interference that local authorities insist are unsupported by the facts

A technical problem at polling locations across Westchester County has become a flashpoint in one of the nation’s most consequential House races, intertwining concerns over election administration with a fierce political battle over the integrity of the vote.

County election officials moved Tuesday to reassure voters after ballot scanners in multiple polling places failed to read some ballots, emphasizing that no voter should leave without casting a vote and that every ballot ultimately will be counted. In a joint statement, Westchester Board of Elections members Tajian Nelson, a Democrat, and Douglas Colety, a Republican, apologized for the disruption and sought to calm growing concerns.

“We want to be absolutely clear, every vote will be counted,” the two officials said, explaining that ballots rejected by scanners would be segregated and reviewed through established counting procedures at a later stage.

The malfunction would have likely remained a local administrative issue were it not unfolding in territory that sits at the heart of a nationally significant congressional fight. Westchester is part of New York’s 17th Congressional District, where Republican Rep. Mike Lawler is seeking reelection against Democratic challenger Cait Conley, a military veteran and former national security official. Democrats view the seat as one of several opportunities to gain ground in their effort to secure a House majority.

As voters encountered delays, prominent allies of President Donald Trump quickly transformed the equipment failures into a broader political controversy. Conservative activist Laura Loomer alleged on X that Democrats were already trying to “steal” the election in New York. Katie Miller, a conservative podcast host, former Trump administration official and wife of former White House adviser Stephen Miller, similarly suggested a deliberate effort was under way, writing that the episode reflected how “the left steals elections.” Rep. Claudia Tenney, a New York Republican, also blamed Democrats, claiming they were willing to do anything to cheat.

CNN, however, noted that the accusations were unsupported and difficult to reconcile with the political realities of Westchester County itself. The county is among the strongest Democratic jurisdictions in New York. In the 2024 presidential election, Kamala Harris carried Westchester by 26 percentage points, making it the fifth-most Democratic county in the state.

That political landscape undercuts the rationale behind claims that Democrats would intentionally disrupt voting there. The contradiction becomes even more pronounced when viewed through the lens of the Lawler-Conley race. According to CNN, the Westchester portion of New York’s 17th District was the only area of the district where Lawler failed to prevail in the 2024 election. Any effort to suppress turnout or interfere with voting in that area would therefore risk harming Democratic voters in one of the few parts of the district where they performed comparatively well.

For election officials, the immediate challenge remains practical rather than political: ensuring voters continue casting ballots despite the disruptions and maintaining confidence that every valid vote will be included in the final count. For politicians and activists, however, the scanner malfunctions have already become the latest front in the broader national dispute over election integrity, trust and the administration of American elections.
