The death toll from Cyclone Chido, which struck the French archipelago of Mayotte in the Indian Ocean, has risen to 39, according to a new report released by local authorities. The announcement comes from the archipelago’s prefect, who released the statement without providing further details on the number of injured or missing.

Devastation in the archipelago: identifications still ongoing

Cyclone Chido struck Mayotte more than a decade ago, leaving devastation and chaos in its wake. Local authorities, along with emergency services, are still in the process of identifying victims. The note circulated by the prefect specifies that “the mission to identify victims continues its work,” a sign that the toll may increase as rescuers reach more isolated areas.

Cyclone impact: extensive damage and rescue missions

The passage of the cyclone caused significant damage in Mayotte, with disruptions in electricity, communications, and major material losses. Relief operations are ongoing to try to restore normalcy and provide assistance to the thousands of people affected. However, the situation remains critical, with many areas still difficult to access.
