Afghanistan, four death sentences carried out in public

Executions in the provinces of Badghis, Nimroz and Farah: the highest number in a single day since the return of the Taliban. UN condemns: ‘Impose a moratorium on capital punishment immediately’

Four public death sentences were carried out in Afghanistan today, the highest number in a single day since the Taliban returned to power in August 2021. This was announced by the Supreme Court in Kabul, which in an official note initially confirmed three executions for murder, but later updated the tally to four.

The events took place in the western provinces of Badghis, Nimroz and Farah, where the men were put to death in front of the population, applying Sharia law according to the strict interpretation imposed by the Taliban regime.

The news provoked an immediate reaction from the UN Human Rights Office, which called the events ‘shocking’ and appealed to the de facto Afghan authorities to impose ‘an immediate moratorium on the death penalty’.

Public executions, which have already been documented in isolated cases in recent months, are now once again giving rise to talk of a return to summary justice, which raises serious international concerns about respect for fundamental rights in the country.
