Rape allegations against Jay-Z: the rapper’s response

New allegations over an affair from 2000: two of the music world’s most influential figures at centre stage

A rape allegation is shaking the music world, involving Jay-Z and Sean Combs, better known as Puff Daddy. A woman has reported that she was raped by the two in 2000, when she was only 13 years old, during a party after the MTV Music Awards. The complaint, initially filed last October against Combs, now also includes the name of Shawn Corey Carter, aka Jay-Z, Beyoncé’s husband.

According to the victim’s reconstruction, both rappers allegedly participated in the assault during an exclusive event. Puff Daddy, already at the centre of several sexual abuse and human trafficking lawsuits, had initially been identified as the only accused along with another celebrity who remained anonymous. The recent amendment of the complaint brought Jay-Z’s name to light, a detail that is causing international public opinion to debate.

Jay-Z responded harshly, calling the accusations ‘heinous’ and an ‘attempt at blackmail’ orchestrated by the victim’s lawyer, Tony Buzbee. ‘I’ve done some research on Buzbee, and he seems to have a recurring pattern of staging these types of accusations,’ the rapper said via a note posted on his Roc Nation label’s Instagram profile. Carter also stressed that these accusations do not represent his way of being, stating, ‘We in Brooklyn have strict moral codes. We protect children, we don’t harm them.’

The rapper also expressed concern about the impact on his family: ‘Me and my wife have to explain to our kids what’s going on. One of them is old enough to hear from their classmates at school about speculation in the press. It is unfair. Children should never have to experience situations like this.’
