Harry and Meghan official status in the UK: King says they don’t represent Britain
King Charles instructs the Lord Chamberlain to confirm that the Sussexes remain private citizens despite their return to London
King Charles III has formally reaffirmed the position of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle following their recent move back to London. Despite relocating to the United Kingdom with their two children, the Sussexes will not represent the nation and will continue to be treated as private citizens — the same status they assumed after stepping down from royal duties in 2020.
According to Sky News, the King asked the Lord Chamberlain to notify government departments, the armed forces and the Lord Lieutenancies after several requests for clarification. The directive arrived only days after the couple’s return from California, where they had lived for the past six years.
In a letter addressed to “principal interlocutors across Government, the Armed Forces and the Lord Lieutenancies,” the King outlined the official standing of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. “Following the decision of the Duke and Duchess to relocate to the United Kingdom, we have received several requests for clarification. To avoid doubt or confusion, the King has directed that the following information be circulated. It is well known that in January 2020 the Duke and Duchess stepped down from representing the Sovereign and are no longer active members of the royal family.”
The letter stresses that this position remains unchanged. The King notes that the couple’s status — distinct from the roles held by working members of the British royal family — ensures their personal freedom, financial independence and privacy “in accordance with their wishes,” and that these conditions “will continue to be fully respected.”
