CNN Voter Poll Signals Mounting Backlash Against Trump’s Leadership
A sweeping voter survey conducted alongside the midterm elections paints a bleak picture for the president, with widespread dissatisfaction over the nation’s direction, persistent inflation pressures and growing belief that White House policies are worsening economic conditions
President Donald Trump is confronting a political landscape defined less by partisan division than by a broader sense of national frustration. Preliminary findings from the CNN Voter Poll show large majorities of American voters dissatisfied with the state of the country, skeptical of the economy and increasingly inclined to hold the president responsible for both.
The survey, conducted in connection with the midterm elections, suggests that public dissatisfaction has become one of the dominant forces shaping the electorate. Roughly three-quarters of voters said they are dissatisfied, or worse, with the way the United States is headed. Nearly four in 10 described themselves as angry, a sign that discontent extends beyond routine political frustration and has hardened into something more intense.
That mood is reflected in assessments of the president. About six in 10 voters disapprove of Trump’s job performance, and roughly half of those critics say they strongly disapprove. The erosion of support is not limited to political opponents. The poll indicates that about one-fifth of voters who backed Trump in the 2024 presidential election now disapprove of the way he is handling the presidency.
Economic concerns remain central to the public mood. The share of Americans reporting financial hardship linked to inflation is largely unchanged from 2024, underscoring the persistence of cost-of-living pressures. What appears to have shifted is where voters assign responsibility.
According to the survey, approximately two-thirds of voters believe Trump has made the nation’s economic conditions worse. Among that group, most attribute rising living costs to the president’s policies rather than to external forces beyond his control, suggesting that economic anxiety is increasingly translating into political accountability.
The findings emerge from the CNN Voter Poll, a nationwide survey effort that combines Election Day interviews at polling locations with tens of thousands of interviews conducted across the country in the weeks before voting. Developed as the successor to traditional exit polls, the project is designed to provide a broader measure of voter attitudes and motivations during a national election cycle.
Together, the results point to an electorate that remains deeply uneasy about both the country’s trajectory and its economic outlook, creating a challenging environment for a president facing growing public skepticism over his leadership and stewardship of the economy.
