Trump Attacks Norway After Second Nobel Rejection

Trump Attacks Norway After Second Nobel Rejection

The president’s latest outburst targets a close NATO ally, the independent Nobel Committee and even Norwegian immigrants, after the 2026 Peace Prize was awarded to Navi Pillay instead of him

Donald Trump has found a new culprit for a frustration that has followed him for years: Norway.

After once again being passed over for the Nobel Peace Prize, the U.S. president used a campaign rally in Michigan to unleash a remarkable attack on one of Washington’s closest European allies, accusing Norway of denying him recognition he believes he deserves and declaring that he no longer wants Norwegian immigrants entering the United States.

The tirade came after the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Navi Pillay, the South African jurist and former International Criminal Court judge, marking the second consecutive year Trump failed to secure a prize he has repeatedly suggested should have gone to him.

Speaking overnight at a rally in Port Huron on behalf of Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers, Trump mixed campaign messaging with personal grievance, directing vulgar insults at Norway while also attacking Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed.

“Frankly, Norway sucks. It’s become a shithole country, really,” Trump told supporters. He then linked the Scandinavian nation to his Nobel disappointment, adding that while he intended to reopen immigration from some countries, Norway would not be among them.

“I don’t want anyone from Norway,” he said. “Because I didn’t get the Nobel Prize.”

The comments landed awkwardly in Michigan, a state with deep Scandinavian roots and a Norwegian-American community exceeding 71,000 people, according to the latest U.S. Census figures.

A Recurring Obsession

The Nobel Prize has long occupied a peculiar place in Trump’s political narrative.

His disappointment did not begin this year. In 2025, he was similarly excluded when the Peace Prize went to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado.

Machado later dedicated the award to Trump in recognition of his support for the Venezuelan opposition and, during a White House meeting last January, offered him the medal associated with the honor. Trump accepted it.

The gesture, however, changed nothing about the official decision. The Norwegian Nobel Committee subsequently clarified that the prize itself cannot be transferred or shared. Machado remains its sole recipient.

That clarification did little to dampen Trump’s resentment. After this year’s award was announced, the president denounced the decision as “shameful and embarrassing,” arguing that his role in resolving international disputes had not received proper recognition.

Oslo Drawn Into a Decision It Never Made

A central flaw in Trump’s argument is one Norwegian officials have now been forced to repeat publicly.

The Nobel Peace Prize is not awarded by the Norwegian government.

Norwegian Foreign Minister Barth Eide addressed the controversy in an interview with broadcaster NRK, responding with a mixture of irritation and restraint.

“He knows very well that the Nobel Committee is independent,” Eide said. “We have reminded him of that, in case anyone was wondering, and we are repeating it again.”

Even while pushing back against Trump’s allegations, Eide sought to limit the diplomatic fallout, characterizing the remarks as election-season rhetoric and emphasizing that Oslo continues to attach “great importance” to its long-standing relationship with the United States.

The unusual nature of the episode was underscored by the fact that the Norwegian Nobel Committee itself issued a reminder that it operates “completely independently” from the Norwegian government.

Bewilderment in Norway

Across Norway, the reaction has ranged from disbelief to weary familiarity.

The New York Times reported that many Norwegians expressed shock at the language used by the American president, noting that some of the terms echoed expressions previously criticized as racist.

Others appeared less surprised.

Eirik Løkke, an analyst at the Oslo-based centrist think tank Civita, said Norwegians have become accustomed to Trump’s volatility and increasingly view such eruptions as part of a familiar pattern rather than a diplomatic crisis.

The assessment reflects a broader reality confronting many U.S. allies: Trump’s outbursts still attract headlines, but their capacity to shock has gradually diminished after years of similar episodes.

The Immigration Contradiction

Trump’s threat to shut the door on Norwegian immigration also collided with a basic statistical reality.

According to figures published by the Norwegian government, migration flows between the two countries moved more strongly in the opposite direction last year.

In 2025, 1,529 Americans relocated to Norway, while 1,005 Norwegians moved to the United States.

The numbers highlight the limited practical significance of Trump’s warning. More Americans chose life in Norway than Norwegians chose life in America.

That did not stop the president from transforming a Nobel Prize disappointment into a diplomatic feud with a NATO ally that had no role in selecting the winner.

For the second year in a row, the Nobel Peace Prize went elsewhere. For the second year in a row, Norway found itself absorbing Trump’s anger over a decision made by an independent committee beyond the control of its government.
