France suspends Shein platform after child pornography doll scandal

The French government temporarily blocks Shein to verify compliance with national regulations

The French government has ordered the suspension of Shein in France after the discovery of child pornography dolls for sale on the Chinese giant’s website. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced the measure, explaining that the platform will remain blocked “for as long as necessary to demonstrate full compliance with French laws and regulations”.

In an official statement, the executive specified that Shein’s suspension in France will remain in effect until the company provides guarantees of compliance with national regulations. “An initial verification must be carried out by ministers within 48 hours,” reads the statement released by the Prime Minister’s office.

Shein suspends sales of third-party products

Meanwhile, the company itself has announced that it has suspended sales of third-party products in France as a precautionary measure. The decision, communicated to the AFP agency, was taken ‘following concerns about certain listings published by independent sellers’.

According to a source close to the matter, Shein’s move is independent of the government’s proceedings but is aimed at ‘ensuring the full safety and compliance of content published on the platform.’

A blow to the Chinese giant’s reputation

Shein’s suspension in France is a blow to the brand’s image, which has already been criticised in the past for its environmental policies and worker protection. The group’s priority now will be to demonstrate transparency and cooperation with the French authorities to prevent the temporary block from becoming a permanent suspension.
