Historic centre-right victory in Greenland election, support for independence on the rise

The centre-right opposition triumphs in the parliamentary elections, while the nationalist Naleraq party, an advocate of immediate independence, gains ground. The government coalition faces crucial negotiations in the coming days

The centre-right opposition scored a resounding victory in the legislative elections in Greenland, a Danish territory at the centre of US President Donald Trump’s interest. Meanwhile, the nationalist Naleraq party, which advocates immediate independence, saw a considerable increase in support, confirming itself as a rising force in the local political landscape.

The democratic party, which describes itself as ‘social liberal’ and prefers a more gradual path to independence, maintained a solid lead during the vote count, according to Greenlandic public broadcaster KNR. However, the Naleraq party, known for its firm stance in favour of a quick break with Denmark, achieved a ‘stunning’ result, consolidating its role in the political debate.

Mute Egede, outgoing Prime Minister and leader of the green left-wing Inuit Ataqatigiit (IA) party, accepted the election result calmly, stating: ‘We respect the election result’ to KNR. The leader of the Siumut party, IA’s coalition partner, also acknowledged defeat. With no party close to an absolute majority of the 31 seats in parliament, negotiations to form a new coalition will be crucial in the coming days. One of the central objectives of the future government will be to define a clear strategy for the path to independence, an issue supported by the majority of Greenland’s 57,000 inhabitants.
