Kamala Harris withdraws from California race: sets sights on 2028
The former vice president rules out running for governor, leaving open the possibility of another bid for the White House
Kamala Harris will not run for governor of California in 2026. The former Democratic vice president, defeated by Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election, announced her decision today, fuelling speculation about a possible return to the presidential race in 2028, when the Republican tycoon will not be able to run again.
‘I have reflected on the best way to serve my country’
‘Over the past six months, I have reflected on this moment in our nation’s history and the best way to continue fighting for the American people,’ Harris said in an official statement. ‘From the beginning of my career, I have believed that the best way to make a difference is to improve the system from within.’
In her message, Harris highlighted the institutional path that led her to serve California and the United States in various roles: prosecutor, Attorney General, senator and vice president.
No governorship, but no farewell to politics
After returning to California in the aftermath of her election defeat, Harris had seriously considered running for state leadership in 2026. ‘I love this state, it’s my home. But after deep reflection, I have decided not to run,’ she explained. The choice therefore seems motivated by a desire to remain free for new national ambitions, fuelling speculation about a presidential bid in 2028.
