Hegseth Defies Impeachment Threat as Trump Weighs His Pentagon Future

Hegseth Defies Impeachment Threat as Trump Weighs His Pentagon Future

The defense secretary is facing mounting Republican pressure over the Iran war and the midterm defeat. Trump continues to back him publicly, but an expected House vote on eight articles of impeachment could expose the fragility of that support

Pete Hegseth is refusing to step aside as pressure mounts over his handling of the Iran war, but the political ground beneath the defense secretary is becoming increasingly uncertain. President Donald Trump has publicly praised him and rejected calls for his departure, while Republican lawmakers are preparing for a potentially damaging impeachment vote in the House next week.

In a combative video recorded outside the building renamed the Department of War, Hegseth dismissed the campaign against him as an attempt at personal destruction. “The politics of personal destruction did not work with President Trump, and they will not work with me,” he said, casting himself as the target of a political attack rather than a Cabinet official facing questions over his decisions.

He defended the military campaign against Iran as a “brave and historic effort” and vowed to continue working under Trump’s leadership to prevent Tehran from acquiring a nuclear weapon. He also urged the outgoing Congress to approve a $350 billion special defense spending bill, regardless of public opinion about the war.

Hegseth reserved some of his sharpest language for Rep. Thomas Massie, the Republican critic of Trump who filed articles of impeachment against him. Calling Massie a “frustrated and defeated congressman,” Hegseth accused him and his Democratic allies of bringing “false articles of impeachment” against him. Their “politics and obsession with political theater,” he said, would not succeed.

The Pentagon’s press office amplified the message with an exhortation that left little room for ambiguity: “Resist, fight, defend the Republic.”

A political lifeline, but no clear escape route

Trump has continued to stand by Hegseth, praising what he called the defense secretary’s “fantastic job” and defending his decision to remove dozens of senior military leaders. Many of them were “woke,” Trump said, adding: “I don’t like woke generals.”

The president has a personal and political affinity for Hegseth, the former television host he fought to install at the Pentagon even when Senate confirmation appeared unlikely. But public loyalty has not ended the uncertainty over the defense secretary’s future. U.S. media reports say Trump is still consulting allies about whether Hegseth should remain in the job.

A Pentagon official told The Hill that replacing him now would be “not practicable,” given the difficulty of finding a successor who could win confirmation from the outgoing Congress.

Another possible route out of the administration — a Senate appointment in Tennessee — also appears to be losing credibility. Reports in recent days had suggested that Hegseth might be considered for the seat being vacated by Republican Sen. Marsha Blackburn, who is leaving Congress in January to take office as the state’s governor. In that role, she will appoint her successor.

But sources familiar with the matter told The Washington Post that Trump had never discussed appointing Hegseth with Blackburn. A member of Blackburn’s team also told the newspaper that the governor-elect was not considering him for the position, dismissing the reports as “rumors being circulated by consultants who have nothing better to do.”

“Washington will not choose Tennessee’s next senator,” the Blackburn team member said.

Trump had fueled speculation when asked about the possibility in recent days, saying Hegseth would make “a very popular senator” while adding that he knew nothing about a potential appointment.

Eight impeachment articles put Hegseth at risk

The immediate threat, however, is in the House. Massie has already filed eight articles of impeachment accusing Hegseth of waging war against Iran without congressional authorization, carrying out the operation that captured Nicolás Maduro without constitutional authority, and overseeing what the articles describe as extrajudicial killings of suspected “narcoterrorists” in military strikes in the Caribbean.

The articles could come to a vote next week, turning the defense secretary’s political troubles into a direct test of support inside the Republican Party.

The timing is particularly dangerous. Republicans hold a majority of just four seats in the outgoing House, and dozens of Republican lawmakers have lost their seats in the midterm elections. The party’s defeat has been blamed on the war, with Vice President JD Vance — and, in a different way, Trump himself — linking the political damage to the conflict.

Several Republican sources told CNN they expect the impeachment articles to pass. If that happens, Hegseth would face a major political setback at a moment when the president is still publicly defending him but has yet to put an end to speculation about his future.
