Prince Harry Weighs Diana Anniversary Documentary as Legacy Returns to Spotlight

Ahead of the 30th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death, the Duke of Sussex is reportedly exploring a documentary project and other initiatives to honor her memory, while renewed attention also surrounds the Spencer family’s account of her life

Three decades after the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, her story is once again moving to the center of public attention. And this time, according to reports, her younger son may be preparing a new tribute of his own.

The Express reports that Prince Harry is in discussions over a documentary dedicated to his mother ahead of the 30th anniversary of her death, which falls next year. The project is said to be among several ideas the Duke of Sussex has been considering as he looks for what has been described as the most meaningful way to honor Diana’s legacy.

According to the report, Harry has already contacted a number of people, including friends and relatives, about potentially taking part. Among the names said to be under consideration is Diana’s brother, Earl Spencer, whose involvement was reported by the Daily Telegraph.

For now, however, no decision has been made.
A source close to the Duke said: “The Duke has discussed a number of possible projects to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the passing of his mother Diana, Princess of Wales. Nothing has been finalized or confirmed, and he is still considering the most meaningful way to honor her legacy during this important anniversary year.”

The anniversary carries particular weight for Harry, who was 12 when Diana died in a car crash in Paris on August 31, 1997. She was 36 years old. His brother, Prince William, was 15.

The two princes had previously set aside differences to commemorate their mother in the 2017 documentary Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy, released for the 20th anniversary of her death. In that film, William and Harry spoke with unusual candor about their memories of Diana and the grief that followed her sudden loss.

Much has changed since then.
Nearly a decade later, relations between the brothers have deteriorated sharply, and the divide between them remains unresolved. The prospect of a new project therefore emerges against a markedly different personal backdrop, even as interest in Diana’s life continues to endure.

That renewed focus extends beyond Harry’s reported plans. Earl Spencer has also revisited his sister’s story in his memoir Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, offering a deeply personal account of their relationship, the hardships she faced and the aftermath of her death. The book also contains critical observations directed at King Charles.

Speaking exclusively to People at Althorp, the Spencer family’s ancestral estate and Diana’s final resting place, Earl Spencer reflected on the lasting role his sister still plays in his life.

“Yes, there are times when I feel Diana beside me during difficult moments. If I have to deal with something really important, a meeting where something crucial will be decided or something similar, I always wear the cufflinks she gave me in the late 1980s as a kind of memorial.

“Last year I had a cousin who tragically died by his own hand, and I told his parents I was wearing Diana’s cufflinks. The memory of Diana still brings comfort to people now,” he said.
