Verizon Fiber-Optic Cable Cut Disrupts Flights at Major East Coast Airports

Delays and cancellations spread across key airports in New York, New Jersey, Boston and Philadelphia after a construction crew accidentally severed a Verizon fiber-optic cable linked to systems supporting air traffic operations

A Verizon fiber-optic cable cut triggered widespread disruption across major airports on the U.S. East Coast, causing delays and cancellations at some of the nation’s busiest aviation hubs.

The outage was traced to construction work in New Jersey, where a crew accidentally severed a Verizon fiber-optic line during excavation activities, according to CNN. The damage affected systems connected to air traffic operations and quickly rippled through the region’s airport network.

Federal Aviation Administration monitoring data showed that many of the delays and operational restrictions remained unresolved as the disruption continued. Airports reporting significant impacts included Boston Logan International Airport, Newark Liberty International Airport, John F. Kennedy International Airport, LaGuardia Airport, Philadelphia International Airport and Teterboro Airport.

Teterboro recorded the longest delays, with waiting times exceeding 255 minutes.

In a statement, Verizon said the damaged fiber-optic cable runs along an Amtrak rail corridor in New Jersey. The company said construction crews working nearby struck and cut the line during excavation work.

Verizon stressed that it was not responsible for the damage and said technicians were actively working to repair the cable and restore connectivity as quickly as possible.

The disruption came on a particularly high-profile day for New York, with around 130 world leaders and dozens of ministers arriving in the city for the annual United Nations General Assembly, one of the most demanding periods of the year for international arrivals.
