Hayden Panettiere’s Cause of Death Confirmed as Accidental Overdose
A South Carolina medical examiner determined that the former Heroes actress died from a lethal combination of fentanyl and other substances after being found dead in Greenville on August 16
The circumstances surrounding Hayden Panettiere’s cause of death are no longer in question. The 36-year-old actress was killed by a toxic mix of fentanyl and other substances, according to the Greenville County medical examiner’s report reviewed by TMZ. Authorities classified the death as accidental, bringing official clarity to a case that had drawn widespread attention since Panettiere was found dead last month in South Carolina.
Toxicology results cited by U.S. media identified several substances in her system. In addition to fentanyl, investigators detected alprazolam, the active ingredient in Xanax, methocarbamol, a prescription muscle relaxant, and quetiapine, a medication commonly used in the treatment of bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and depression.
Panettiere was found dead on August 16 inside an apartment in Greenville, where she had recently traveled from Los Angeles with her boyfriend, Brian Hickerson.
According to reports, the alarm was raised by Hickerson and the actress’s brother, Zach. Emergency services were called after Panettiere was discovered unresponsive. Hickerson reportedly administered Narcan, a medication used to reverse opioid overdoses, in an attempt to revive her before rescuers arrived, but the effort was unsuccessful.
An earlier autopsy had already ruled out traumatic injuries or other physical signs that could have contributed to her death. The final findings instead pointed to a fatal interaction of the substances detected in her body, leading investigators to classify the overdose as accidental.
