Typhoon Fung-Wong is approaching the Philippines with devastating winds and torrential rain. Electricity has been cut off as a precautionary measure in several areas of the eastern provinces. Typhoon Fung-Wong has recorded maximum winds of 185 kilometres per hour and gusts of up to 230. According to forecasts, more than 8.4 million people could be affected in some way by its passage. The Philippines faces an average of 20 tropical cyclones each year, but the power of this weather system is reminiscent of the dark days of Super Typhoon Haiyan in 2013, which killed more than 6,300 people.

State of emergency declared by Marcos Jr

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr declared a state of emergency last Thursday, a measure that is still in force throughout the country.
