Alanis Morissette Says She Is Pansexual in Podcast Interview
The singer made the disclosure on Handsome after a playful exchange with hosts Tig Notaro, Fortune Feimster and Mae Martin about her past relationships with men
Alanis Morissette has publicly described herself as pansexual, saying her attraction is not limited by a person’s sex, gender or gender identity.
The singer and actress made the disclosure during an appearance on the Handsome podcast, hosted by Tig Notaro, Fortune Feimster and Mae Martin. The subject came up after the hosts joked about the men who had hurt Morissette — adding that, while they felt sorry for her experiences, they were grateful for the songs those relationships had inspired.
They then asked whether those experiences had ever made her want to become a lesbian. Morissette answered directly: “I’m pansexual, so, yes.”
The conversation comes after Morissette revisited another moment involving same-sex attraction: her guest appearance on Sex and the City, in which she kissed Sarah Jessica Parker, who played Carrie Bradshaw.
Morissette has said the idea for the scene came from her. She contacted the show’s producers and suggested that it might be the right time for Bradshaw to have a lesbian experience. The response, she recalled, was enthusiastic: “Why not? We were thinking the same thing.”
Looking back on the scene, Morissette described the kiss as “very pleasant” and the experience as “natural” and “carefree.”
