Trump moves towards restrictions on Covid vaccines after reports of infant deaths

According to the Washington Post, the administration is considering restrictions after 25 child deaths were reported in the Vaers database, but the CDC warns: “No proven link”

Health officials in the Trump administration are considering limiting recommendations for Covid vaccines after the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (Vaers) recorded 25 deaths of minors. The Washington Post cites four sources saying this data will be presented to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) panel next week.

The limitation of the Vaers database

Vaers collects reports of adverse events that anyone can submit, from doctors to individual citizens, without preliminary verification. The CDC reiterates that the system does not establish any causal link between the vaccine and death, which can only be ascertained through in-depth scientific investigation.

Data and paediatric recommendations

A previous CDC report in June indicated that 25 children died after being hospitalised for Covid, none of the 16 eligible children were up to date with their vaccinations. The American Academy of Paediatrics continues to recommend the annual vaccine for children between 6 and 23 months of age and to advise protection even beyond this age group.

The role of the FDA

Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Marty Makary confirmed to CNN that investigations are underway into alleged deaths of vaccinated children, with autopsy reviews and interviews with families. The investigation could take months. Meanwhile, the FDA has already approved new vaccines for people over 65 and vulnerable individuals, while the CDC remains free to recommend immunisation for broader age groups.
