Hurricane Isaias Strengthens as Gulf Coast Braces for Landfall
Evacuation orders are in effect in parts of the Southeast, with storm surge, torrential rain and possible tornadoes threatening coastal communities
Hurricane Isaias is intensifying as it moves toward the northern Gulf Coast, threatening coastal communities with storm surge, torrential rainfall and possible tornadoes. The storm has reached a strong Category 2, and forecasters expect it to briefly become a major hurricane early today before weakening slightly ahead of an expected landfall late tonight.
Coastal areas could face storm surge reaching 2 meters and rainfall totals of up to 38 centimeters. Brief, fast-forming tornadoes are also possible, adding to the risks as the storm approaches land.
Authorities in parts of Alabama, Florida and Georgia have declared states of emergency, while mandatory evacuation orders have been issued in some areas. Several Florida airports are expected to close ahead of the storm, and Amtrak service in parts of Louisiana and Alabama will be disrupted.
Charleston prepares for flooding before the storm arrives
The threat extends beyond the Gulf Coast. In Charleston, South Carolina, officials are preparing for lingering effects from Isaias even before the hurricane makes landfall.
Mayor William S. Cogswell Jr. activated the city’s flood-prevention plan on Tuesday, anticipating heavy rain and high tides over the weekend. The combination could bring flooding to the Atlantic coastal city as the storm’s effects spread beyond the immediate landfall zone.
