Ecuador Priest Killed by Falling Cross Moments After Speaking About Death
A sermon on faith, mortality and the value of time took a tragic turn in Guayaquil when Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari was struck by a cross that detached from the wall behind him during Mass
What began as a reflection on the fleeting nature of life ended in a tragedy that stunned an entire congregation.
Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari was celebrating Mass at the Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Guayaquil, Ecuador, when a large cross detached from the wall behind the altar and struck him in the head, according to reports cited by the New York Post. The accident occurred just seconds after the priest had been speaking to worshippers about death and the importance of dedicating time to God rather than material pursuits.
“One day, we too will die here, and sometimes the time we dedicate to material things does not have the same meaning as the time we spend with God,” Sánchez Molinari told the congregation during his homily.
Developing that theme, he urged those gathered to value the time spent with God, family and loved ones.
“The quality time we dedicate to God, to our brothers and sisters, to our husbands, wives, children and family members, that is the time best spent,” he said before asking for God’s blessing upon the congregation and beginning another prayer.
At that very moment, the sermon’s message and reality collided.
The large cross mounted on the wall behind the priest suddenly came loose and crashed forward, hitting him directly in the head. Parishioners watched in horror as he collapsed from the impact.
Local media reported that Sánchez Molinari later died from his injuries despite attempts by people inside the church to help him. Shock quickly spread among those attending the service, while the tragedy also unfolded before online viewers because the Mass was being livestreamed.
Witnesses described scenes of disbelief as the church, moments earlier filled with prayer, fell silent before grief overwhelmed the congregation.
Following the priest’s death, church authorities issued a public statement mourning the loss of the parish leader.
“We announce that our beloved Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, parish priest of the Church of Perpetual Help in the Central Vicariate, has gone to the Father’s House to enjoy His presence and His glory,” the church said.
The fatal accident occurred at the Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Guayaquil, where Sánchez Molinari served as parish priest.
