King Charles’s Sandringham Estate Hit by Rat Infestation in 300 Rental Homes

The Norfolk property, home to roughly 500 residents, is battling a severe rodent problem. Rats threaten both tenants and surrounding farmland, yet a simple fix remains off-limits due to a long-standing royal ban

Sandringham Estate, the sprawling Norfolk property owned by King Charles, is grappling with a severe rat infestation that has reached roughly 300 rental homes on the grounds. The estate stretches across more than 8,000 hectares and houses about 500 people, but the rodent problem is now spilling beyond residential areas into surrounding farmland, raising concerns about crop damage and food resources.

Residents have reported growing frustration as the rat population swells. Agricultural workers in the area note that the abundance of food in nearby cultivated fields likely draws rats and mice into the zone, compounding the problem for both tenants and farmers.

A straightforward solution would be to deploy cats for pest control. That option, however, remains closed. Queen Elizabeth II banned cats from the property, concerned that they would threaten local wildlife, including game birds. Some speculate the restriction may also have stemmed from the late monarch’s own cat allergy.

The infestation is not the first pest problem to hit royal property this year. Prince Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, who was removed from Royal Lodge, relocated to Marsh Farm in Wolferton at the start of the year and soon faced a mole invasion. The property suffered significant ground damage after dozens of molehills appeared across the lawn. Following complaints, a van from Command Pest Control, a company specializing in mole and pest removal, was seen leaving the estate.
