Trump’s weight gain raises health concerns, expert says
The president has reached 108 kilograms at 1.90 meters. Italian obesity specialist Silvio Buscemi says the rapid increase in weight deserves attention, particularly because of its potential cardiovascular and metabolic implications
President Donald Trump’s weight has become a subject of international media attention after he reportedly gained about 10 kilograms in recent months, reaching 108 kilograms. The increase has also prompted questions about his health. According to Silvio Buscemi, president of the Italian Society of Obesity, the change deserves attention because of its potential cardiovascular and metabolic implications.
“Certainly, this is a situation that needs to be monitored, considering that Trump has reached 108 kilograms at a height of 1.90 meters and is 80 years old,” Buscemi told Adnkronos Salute. “In general terms, with these figures there may be concerns about cardiovascular and metabolic health.”
The specialist believes the increase may be linked to the demands of Trump’s lifestyle, marked by constant travel, official engagements, lunches, dinners and receptions.
“I believe this increase is the result of a complex lifestyle, made up of continuous travel, movements, lunches, dinners and receptions,” Buscemi said. “Inevitably, lifestyle is affected, and this has translated into weight gain. It is an indicator of the stress the president is under.”
A significant increase in weight can carry different implications from maintaining a high but stable weight, the expert explained. If Trump had remained at 108 kilograms for a longer period, the potential impact on cardiovascular and metabolic risk might have been different.
“What matters is understanding how he gained those additional 10 kilograms,” Buscemi said. “We would need to know whether they consist of visceral or abdominal fat, which would be more concerning, whether he has lost lean mass or gained lean mass, and to carry out a broader assessment, also taking laboratory tests into account.”
Trump has never concealed his preference for junk food or his dislike of exercise. He has repeatedly said that he does not enjoy working out because he finds it boring, rejecting the idea of spending time on a treadmill. Golf is the main exception, although the president generally drives a cart along the fairway and tends to walk only around the green.
Buscemi also cautioned against focusing too heavily on the numerical threshold used to define obesity. At 108 kilograms and 1.90 meters, Trump is just below the body mass index threshold generally used to classify obesity.
“He is missing 750 grams, but even if he gained them, it would not change much,” Buscemi said. “These are figures used to assess the general population, not an individual patient, whose specific circumstances and clinical condition must instead be evaluated through targeted examinations.”
For Buscemi, the more significant issue is the scale and speed of the change.
“The warning sign is this: Trump has gained approximately 10% of his body weight in a relatively short period,” he said. “In general, this is associated with things that are not good for health, so the president would do well to return to healthier parameters.”
The question, he added, is why the weight gain occurred. Increased food intake and reduced physical activity may be part of the explanation, while the demands of presidential travel and frequent official events can make a healthy routine difficult to maintain.
Frequent changes in time zones can also affect circadian rhythms, stress hormones and sleep, according to Buscemi. Together, these factors can contribute to a substantial disruption of normal lifestyle patterns.
“There is a major upheaval,” he said. “Generally, at the president’s age, we do not most often see people gaining weight. Instead, we tend to see weight loss, including reductions in lean body mass. The natural pattern of human weight change with aging means that at that age people generally begin to lose weight spontaneously.”
Trump’s circumstances, however, are different from those of the average person of the same age, Buscemi said. The demands of his position make maintaining a healthy lifestyle considerably more difficult.
The specialist pointed to political campaigns as a smaller-scale example of the same phenomenon: candidates often gain substantial amounts of weight because of insufficient sleep, constant travel, frequent meals and dinners, and high levels of stress.
