Finland investigates suspected Russian airspace violation
Helsinki opened an investigation after a Russian aircraft was suspected of entering Finnish airspace as Moscow warned that Finnish weapons deliveries to Ukraine would draw a response
Finland is investigating a suspected violation of its airspace by a Russian aircraft, the Defense Ministry said, as tensions between Helsinki and Moscow rose over Finnish military support for Ukraine.
The aircraft is suspected of entering Finnish airspace on Thursday afternoon in the western part of the Gulf of Finland, according to the ministry.
“Every suspected violation of airspace is taken seriously. An investigation is underway,” Finnish Defense Minister Antti Hakkanen said in a statement.
The incident came on the same day that Moscow issued a warning over Finland’s weapons deliveries to Ukraine.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said during a press briefing that Finnish arms shipments to Ukraine would not go unanswered.
“Finnish weapons crossing the Ukrainian border automatically become a legitimate target for the Russian armed forces,” Zakharova said. She added that no hostile attack originating from Helsinki would go unanswered and that Russia would respond in what she described as a measured manner and in accordance with its national interests.
The Finnish government has not publicly attributed the suspected airspace violation to Russia pending the outcome of its investigation.
