Trump Accuses Iran of Drone Strike in Strait of Hormuz Incident

Trump Accuses Iran of Drone Strike in Strait of Hormuz Incident

Donald Trump alleges a drone attack on a commercial vessel as tensions over maritime routes in the Strait of Hormuz intensify amid competing U.S. and Iranian claims on navigation rules and security guarantees

Donald Trump has accused Iran of launching at least four one-way attack drones against vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, escalating tensions over maritime security in one of the world’s most strategic shipping lanes.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said one of the drones “hit the upper deck of a large, very expensive cargo ship,” causing damage but not preventing it from continuing its voyage. He added that U.S. forces intercepted the remaining three drones, calling the incident “a reckless violation” of what he described as an existing ceasefire agreement.

The claim comes at a moment when Iran and the United States have reportedly established a communication channel over the Strait of Hormuz aimed at preventing incidents that could trigger military escalation. According to a source cited by Iranian broadcaster Press TV, mediators involved in talks in Switzerland facilitated the arrangement.

Press TV reported that under a provisional 14-point agreement signed on June 18, which it says ended a conflict that began on February 28, Tehran committed to ensuring safe passage for commercial vessels for 60 days without charging transit fees. At the same time, Iran has insisted that all shipping through the strait must follow routes designated by Iranian authorities.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical global chokepoint, handling roughly 20% of the world’s oil trade, and both sides continue to frame navigation rules as a matter of strategic control.

The Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA) has warned that vessels using routes not approved by Tehran will not receive security guarantees or insurance coverage. In a statement on X, the body said the measure was issued in response to repeated requests for clarification from maritime operators, adding that responsibility for any consequences would fall on ship owners, operators, and captains.

The warning follows reports of an attack on a Singapore-flagged cargo vessel off the coast of Oman. Iranian authorities said the vessel was affected amid heightened regional maritime tensions.

On Friday, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps reiterated that passage through the Strait of Hormuz is permitted only via routes announced by Tehran. State media quoted IRIB as saying that three oil tankers attempting to transit without authorization turned back after warnings from the Guards.

Iran continues to assert that its naval forces and regulatory framework define the governing rules of the strait, reinforcing its position over one of the world’s most closely watched maritime corridors.
