Trump-Putin summit, confidential documents left behind in an Alaska hotel

The incredible oversight at the Captain Cook Hotel in Anchorage: papers with official logos and operational details of the summit found in a printer.

A sensational gaffe rocks the US State Department. NPR has revealed that a series of documents classified as preparatory for the summit between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin were found by chance inside the printer of the business center at the Captain Cook Hotel in Anchorage. These are eight pages with the official stamp of the administration, which contained not only the planning of the meetings, but also schedules, precise locations, and full names of participants with direct contacts of US officials.

The unattended papers even included the program for an official lunch in honor of the Russian president, which was later canceled, with a menu already prepared: green salad with champagne vinaigrette, filet mignon, halibut, and crème brûlée. There was also a table arrangement that would have seen Trump and Putin sitting opposite each other, accompanied by their respective delegations.

Another curious detail was the gift Trump had planned for the Kremlin leader: a small desk statue depicting the American bald eagle, the national symbol of the United States. The documents also included a list of the names of the delegations, accompanied by the phonetic transcription of the Russian names, so as to facilitate their pronunciation by American diplomats.

The episode raises new questions about the security measures taken for such a high-level summit, held at the nearby Elmendorf-Richardson military base.
