Trump: ‘US will buy and control Gaza after war’

The president proposes outsourcing reconstruction to other Middle Eastern countries. Meanwhile, he announces new tariffs on steel and aluminium

The US intends to ‘buy and control’ Gaza once the conflict between Israel and Hamas is over. This was stated by President Donald Trump aboard Air Force One on his way to New Orleans to attend the Super Bowl. The US leader added that the reconstruction of the war-torn enclave could be entrusted to other countries in the region.

‘Gaza is a destroyed place, you can’t live in those buildings right now, they are very unsafe,’ Trump said, reiterating the need for a new arrangement for the Palestinian territory.

In his speech, the president also commented on the release of three Israeli hostages by Hamas, claiming that Eli Sharabi, Or Levy and Ohad Ben Ami ‘looked like Holocaust survivors’ due to their physical condition. ‘They were emaciated, they looked as if they had not eaten for a month,’ he said, adding that the US might “lose patience” if the situation did not change.

In parallel, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called his recent meeting with Trump a ‘historic step’ for Israel’s security, speaking of a ‘revolutionary vision’ that could open up new opportunities for the Jewish state.

Trump finally announced new economic measures, saying he will impose 25% tariffs on steel and aluminium imported into the US. He also anticipated further ‘reciprocal’ tariffs that will be announced in the coming days and will come into effect ‘almost immediately’.
