Pope Francis opens the Holy Door: the Jubilee 2025 begins LIVE VIDEO

At 7 p.m. (Italian time) the official opening of the Holy Door at St. Peter’s marks the start of Jubilee 2025. A webcam will allow people to pass through it virtually

Pope Francis will open the Holy Door of St. Peter’s Basilica today at 7 p.m., officially beginning Jubilee 2025. This solemn rite, a symbol of indulgence and spiritual journey, has been repeated for more than five centuries. It was first mentioned in 1500, with Pope Alexander VI, when the Door became the focal point of the beginning of the Holy Year.

During the ceremony, the Pope will push open the shutters of the Door, after the wall sealing it has been dismantled in the preceding days. The gesture marks the symbolic opening to conversion and salvation. A webcam, new this year, will allow those unable to travel to Rome to pass through it virtually.

The Holy Door, created in 1949 by sculptor Vico Consorti, will remain open throughout the Jubilee, until its closure at the end of the Holy Year. The sculptural cycle on the Door tells the story of redemption, culminating in the image of Christ as the door of salvation.

The other Holy Doors in the papal basilicas will be opened in the coming days, with a significant novelty: on December 26 Pope Francis will symbolically open a Holy Door in the Rebibbia prison, a historic gesture for the Jubilee.
