Trump’s shifting 9/11 story grows sharper edges on the 25th anniversary

Trump’s shifting 9/11 story grows sharper edges on the 25th anniversary

Across two decades, the president’s recollections have blended verifiable moments with claims repeatedly contradicted by independent reporting

Twenty‑five years after the September 11 attacks, President Donald Trump’s account of those days has become a patchwork of verified appearances, embellished memories and episodes for which no independent evidence has ever surfaced. Over time, his narrative has shifted, expanded and occasionally contradicted itself — a pattern that has drawn renewed attention during this week’s commemorations.

The latest addition came Tuesday, at a ceremony honoring victims and first responders. Trump claimed he mobilized his construction crew immediately after the attacks:

“I was building a big building in New York and brought my whole team down there right after what happened.”

He later clarified he did not arrive on September 11, but “shortly after.”

He then described a dramatic scene near One Liberty Plaza — the former U.S. Steel Building — where he said firefighters grabbed him under the arms and dragged him away as fears mounted that the tower might collapse.

But that account does not match any known record. Fact‑checking by PBS, PolitiFact and The Atlantic found no evidence that Trump was present during that moment, nor that he was escorted to safety by firefighters. The concern over the building’s stability is documented; Trump’s involvement is not. A shorter version of the same story appeared in 2016 and again in 2021.

The one moment that is documented

Trump’s presence in Lower Manhattan on September 13 — two days after the attacks — is verified. Archival footage shows him speaking with reporters, saying he had “more than 100 men” already working at the site and another “100 to 150” on the way.

He described “a couple of hundred people” involved in operations around the ruins. Yet no independent evidence has ever confirmed that hundreds of his employees participated in debris‑removal efforts. Richard Alles, a senior FDNY official involved in the response, said he had never heard of Trump or a large team of his workers being present. A contingent of that size, he noted, would have appeared in operational logs.

The 11 September interview — and what came later

Trump’s account of the attacks themselves has also evolved. On September 11, 2001, he spoke live from Trump Tower — roughly four miles from the World Trade Center — saying he had a window with a view of the towers and had witnessed a “huge explosion.”

In later years, he added new details: claiming he saw the second plane hit, and even people jumping from the buildings. None of those elements appear in his original interview.

He also asserted that his building at 40 Wall Street had become the tallest in Lower Manhattan after the collapse of the Twin Towers — a claim disproven by the fact that 70 Pine Street was taller.

Other disputed claims over the years

Trump’s 9/11‑related statements have included other claims that collapsed under scrutiny. During the 2015 campaign, he said he saw “thousands and thousands” of people in Jersey City celebrating as the towers fell — referring to Muslim residents. Multiple fact‑checkers found no evidence supporting that assertion.

In 2019, he shared a video suggesting that Democratic congresswoman Ilhan Omar had been dancing on the anniversary of the attacks. CBS News determined the footage was from a Congressional Black Caucus event, not from September 11.

Trump has also said he foresaw the threat posed by Osama bin Laden, citing a passage from his 2000 book The America We Deserve. While bin Laden was mentioned, he and al‑Qaeda were already well‑known in the United States due to the 1998 embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania — attacks carried out by a terrorist organization responsible for mass casualties and grave human rights violations.

The 25th anniversary

On the 25th anniversary, Trump did not attend the Ground Zero ceremony. The administration was represented by Vice President JD Vance. Trump instead joined the commemoration at the Pentagon with First Lady Melania Trump.

In his remarks, he honored the victims and spoke of national unity:

“That day we were all New Yorkers. Every one of us. We were all New Yorkers, but we were also all Americans. We were all one family.”

His words returned to a moment that, in his own retellings, has taken on shifting contours — a narrative that continues to evolve, and continues to be scrutinized.
