Israel Raises Multi-Front Security Alert Ahead of October 7 Anniversary
Warnings of possible Hamas attacks, heightened threats abroad and contingency plans for a wider conflict in the West Bank place Israeli security forces on high alert ahead of the October 27 election
Israel has entered a period of heightened security concern ahead of the third anniversary of the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack, with senior officials warning of potential threats ranging from attacks against Israelis abroad to new violence in Gaza and a possible escalation in the West Bank.
The broad warning was underscored by Israel’s National Security Council, which cautioned that the anniversary could serve as a rallying point for hostile groups seeking to target Israelis and Jews overseas. In an advisory circulated through the Prime Minister’s Office, the council said Iran, its proxies, Hamas and global jihadist organizations view the date as a significant milestone and could seek to exploit it through terrorist attacks.
As a result, Israeli authorities urged citizens to avoid travel to Jordan, Qatar, Somaliland and Egypt, including the Sinai Peninsula, while recommending heightened vigilance for those already abroad.
The overseas alert comes as Israeli officials assess the possibility of renewed Hamas activity closer to home. According to warnings attributed to David Zini, head of the Shin Bet security service, Hamas could attempt a major attack in the period leading up to Israel’s October 27 election or immediately afterward.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu argued that Hamas, weakened by the war, may still seek a final opportunity to influence events inside Israel before voters go to the polls.
“Because Hamas is so weak, it will try to challenge us with what remains of its forces before the election, in an attempt to influence” the outcome, Netanyahu said, according to The Times of Israel. He added that Israel was prepared to foil such attempts and would respond with overwhelming force if they occurred.
Security concerns are not limited to Hamas. Defense Minister Israel Katz said intelligence assessments indicate that Hamas may attempt attacks against Israeli forces operating in Gaza on the anniversary of the October 7 massacre itself.
At the same time, Katz outlined what could become a far broader security challenge. Speaking to Israeli ministers, he said the Israel Defense Forces have been instructed to prepare for the possibility of hostilities involving the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank.
According to Katz, the military’s planning scenario includes the possibility of attacks by jihadist elements against Israeli settlers and IDF troops. He further said Israeli forces are preparing for a situation in which Palestinian Authority security personnel and the affiliated Tanzim organization could turn their weapons against Israeli soldiers and settlers in the West Bank and along nearby frontiers.
Katz said such a development would be treated as a declaration of war by the Palestinian Authority and would trigger a military response based on plans approved by both himself and Netanyahu.
The defense minister described the potential operation as a short but decisive campaign that could involve ground forces, air power and special capabilities. According to his remarks, the plan would include actions against weapons stockpiles, senior officials and infrastructure inside West Bank cities and refugee camps, modeled on previous military campaigns in Gaza and Lebanon.
The unusually stark warnings come less than three weeks before Israelis head to the polls on October 27 and as security agencies prepare for commemorations of one of the most traumatic days in the country’s history. With officials warning of risks overseas, potential attacks from Hamas and the prospect of wider regional instability, Israeli authorities are treating the coming weeks as a period of exceptional sensitivity.
