Prince William Could Strip Harry and Meghan of Titles Once He Is King
Royal correspondent Sarah Hewson believes the heir apparent may follow King Charles’s playbook with Prince Andrew after he ascends the throne. The brothers remain estranged despite a recent family gathering at Highgrove House
Prince William may eventually strip Prince Harry and Meghan Markle of their royal titles once he takes the throne, mirroring the approach his father recently took with Prince Andrew. That is the view of Sarah Hewson, a royal correspondent who argues the scenario could unfold only after William becomes king.
The speculation follows a private family gathering at Highgrove House, where King Charles and Queen Camilla met with Harry, Meghan, and their children Archie and Lilibet. Buckingham Palace confirmed the meeting and stated no photographs or further details would be released, calling it a family matter. According to reports, the Prince and Princess of Wales were not present.
The encounter raised public hopes of a thaw in the strained relationship between the Sussexes and the royal family. Yet Hewson sees little cause for optimism. The distance between the brothers, she notes, remains vast. During Harry’s six-day stay in the United Kingdom two weeks ago, the two princes did not meet for even a minute.
The question of the Sussex titles has lingered for years. Harry and Meghan stepped back from royal duties in 2020 and built their lives in California, a move compounded by their public criticism of the institution. The topic resurfaced during a podcast hosted by JJ Anisiobi, who asked Hewson whether King Charles would go so far as to revoke the couple’s titles.
Hewson’s response was measured but hardly reassuring. “You know, we’ve always been told it’s not in the King’s power. It takes an Act of Parliament. But we’ve seen with Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor that there are ways around this,” she said. She added that she does not believe Charles wants to take such a step, suggesting the King still hopes for a family reconciliation. William, however, “could” use title revocation to “punish” his brother and sister-in-law once he is monarch.
